According to the EPA, the vinyl industry’s VCM emissions have been reduced by more than 99% since the 1970s.
There is no confirmed case on record where a member of the general population has been harmed by exposure to VCM.
The actual risk among five million individuals presumed to live within five miles of a vinyl production facility has been calculated to be less than 0.1 cases of cancer in the next 70 years.
For comparison, this is similar to the risk over a lifetime of smoking 1.4 cigarettes, drinking 0.5 liters of wine, and traveling 300 miles by car.
